The Yoruba Ronu Group has urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure a member of the Progressives emerged as governor of Ondo State.
In a statement at the weekend, the group expressed it’s concerns for a core progressive to be supported for the position.
The group noted that Ondo State had historically lacked progressive governance, despite being the birthplace of the progressive movement in Nigeria.
It further said that President Tinubu had struggled to ensure a politician of progressive background becomes the governor of the state.
“The Yoruba Ronu Group emphasizes the importance of selecting a progressive-leaning candidate in the forthcoming APC primary in April,” the statement signed by its Secretary General, Oluwatosin Adeniyi, said.
The group “acknowledge that many party stalwarts are vying for the party ticket and believe that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s influence will play a crucial role in the decision-making process.”
It urged President Tinubu to choose wisely, as Ondo State is the only state where he had not firmly established his political legacy, despite significant resources invested in stabilizing the progressives party in the state.
Yoruba Ronu also advocated a candidate who is known to the people of the state and has demonstrated a commitment to progressive politics over the years.
“The Yoruba Ronu Group offers to suggest and endorse a candidate in their next Congress, as they did when they publicly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intention to run for the Nigerian presidency,” the statement further read.
“In conclusion, the group urges President Tinubu to ensure a fair and orderly APC governorship primary in Ondo State, with the aim of selecting a progressive politician who can become the party’s flag bearer in the November 2024 governorship election.”
