The House of Representatives has approved the declaration of a state of emergency for Rivers State despite despite public outcry against the President’s ‘unconstitutional’ pronouncements.
The lower chamber also went ahead to sanction the six-month suspension imposed on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the assembly.
The House on Thursday reached the decision through a voice vote.
The Senate is expected to also approve the emergency declaration for it to be effective.
Legal luminaries and other stakeholders have condemned the suspension of the Rivers State Democratic institutions, describing it as unconstitutional and illegal.
They have opened that the action of the President was a misinterpretation of Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
