The Ondo State Police Command says it has arrested a suspected murderer, identified as Samuel Akoade, in connection with the killing of a 60-year-old woman, Olufunke Akoade, at Ore in Odigbo Local Government Area of the State.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m in the Powerline area, along the Ore–Okitipupa Road.

Sources claimed Samuel allegedly attacked the woman who happened to be his mother with a cutlass, inflicting severe injuries that resulted in her death.

Police spokesperson, Jimoh Abayomi, who confirmed the incident, said the police was yet to ascertain the reason for the attack, but noted the police had commenced investigations.

He said the Command received a report that the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood at her residence.

“Preliminary information revealed that the victim had sustained deep machete cuts and was already dead when she was discovered,” he said.

“Following the report, police operatives from Ore Division immediately mobilised to the scene, secured the area and commenced preliminary investigation.

“A machete suspected to have been used in the attack was recovered, while the scene was photographed and documented.”

According to him, the suspected assailant, initially identified simply as Samuel, was reported to have fled the scene before the arrival of the police.

He was however apprehended following sustained efforts by the operatives and taken into police custody.

Mr Abayomi added that the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary, while the suspect remains in custody.

“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Akure, for further investigation,” he said.

“The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Felix N. Ohagwu, psc, mnips, mspsp, has directed that the investigation be conducted thoroughly and professionally to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.”

He expressed the Command’s reassurance to protecting lives and property and urged members of the public to continue providing timely and useful information to the police, particularly on suspicious activities within their communities.

This will be the second time a similar occurence would be recorded in Ondo State in one year.

In April this year, a 23-year-old man, Ifeoluwa Fagibowopo, was arrested in Supare Akoko, in Akoko South-West Local Government Area, Ondo State, by Amotekun operatives for hacking his health-officer mother to death.

Also in April this year, a 28-year-old man allegedly attacked and killed three family members (including two siblings and a young child) on Doctor’s Road in Okitipupa, with locals attributing the incident to substance abuse.

The same incident occured in Oda community in Akure South Local Government Area in June, when a 65-year-old man lost his life during an altercation reportedly sparked by a minor ₦500 disagreement with a young man.

All this add to a sordid incident which occured in September 2025, in Ore, Odigbo LGA, involving a 35-year-old carpenter named Ahmed Toheed, who was arrested and remanded for allegedly strangling and raping his 64-year-old grandmother, Mulikat Sanni, after accusing her of witchcraft.
