Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday night held a meeting with with the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, David Mark, fueling assumptions the Otuoke-born politician is set for a return to office in 2027.
The meeting came shortly after Mark, former vice president Atiku Abubakar and other top members of the ADC held its First National Caucus meeting in Abuja.
Jonathan was welcomed to the Abuja residence of the ADC Chairman by Mark, alongside some members of the party, a former Secretary to the Federal Government, Babachir Lawal, party spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi and a former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kola Ologbondiyan, among others.
Although the agenda for the meeting could not be ascertained immediately, there are feelers that the talks centered on the 2027 presidential election.
The visit comes amid intense pressure on the former president to run for Presidency in the next general election against incumbent President Bola Tinubu.
Some members of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have been wooing Jonathan to pick the party’s ticket and contest the next election against President Bola Tinubu.
Jonathan, who lost the 2015 presidential election to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, is yet to declare his interest in the presidential race.He had earlier denied reports that he rejected calls to run in 2027.
On September 11, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, met Jonathan in Abuja, fueling more speculations about his stance on the 2027 election.
It will recalled that David Mark was the Senate President during the administration of Jonathan and had led the Senate to pass the “Doctrine of Necessity” which enabled Jonathan to assume office as Acting President when President Musa Yar’Adua was critically ill.
