The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has commiserated with the family of Pa Ayo Adebanjo passed away on Friday morning at the age of 96.

The Governor said he was saddened to learn of the passing of Chief Adebanjo, whom he described as a leader and statesman who dedicated his life to serving the people.

“Throughout his lifetime, Pa Adebanjo demonstrated unwavering commitment to the values of democracy, justice, and equality in Nigeria,” Governor Aiyedatiwa said.

“His tireless efforts to promote peace, stability, and prosperity have left an indelible mark on our country’s history.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May they find comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders and citizens.”

Also, the leadership of Afenifere formally announced the passage of Chief Adebanjo.

In a statement by its General Secretary, Sola Eboseni, the group describes the late leader as an avowed Awoist and progressive school of thought.

Afenifere said Ayo Adebanjo was known for his central stage advocacy of restructuring, true federalism and a Nigeria of equity, fairness and true sense of belonging for its constituent ethnic nationalities.

“For about a decade Baba had often reminded his followers that at his age, he was already at the ‘departure lounge’ to strengthen us for the continued struggle for a better Nigeria, a country he truly loved. We will undauntedly keep the banner afloat,” the statement said.

“Subsequent statements will be made available as directed by the Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan in consultation with Baba’s immediate family.”

Elder statesman’s family had in a statement earlier announced the death of their patriarch, saying he passed away in his home in Lekki, Lagos at the age of 96.

The statement was jointly signed by his children, namely, Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo..

“He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria home at the age of 96,” the statement read.

I“We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice.

“His belief and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was total, and this he fought for until he breathed his last breath.”

The family also disclosed that consultations are ongoing with Adebanjo’s friends, associates, and various interest groups across the country and beyond to finalise plans for a befitting funeral.

According to the statement, details of the funeral arrangements will be announced in due course, adding that a condolence register has been opened at his residence in Lagos and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

Pa Adebanjo, a former organising secretary of the defunct Action Group is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, along with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
