The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) has clarified an alleged abuse of the naira at a wedding in Kano on Friday, October 24, 2024 by a daughter of former governor, Danjuma Godge.
A video of the spraying of the naira at the wedding had gone viral, with allegations of the abuse were imputed to Fauziya Danjuma Godge, the daughter of a former Governor of Gombe State and senator.
Nigerians in their reaction to the video had called on the EFCC to immediately investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.
However, a statement by the EFCC, said it swung into action by analysing the video and findings showed that the alleged naira abuse actually happened but not at the wedding of Goje’s daughter but at the wedding dinner of Amina Babagana Zannah held on the afore-mentioned date.
“Zannah is the daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna(a.ka. Hafsat Gold Nigeria) who is the Chief Executive Officer of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise with offices in Abuja, Kano and Dubai( United Arab Emirate),” the EFCC statement read in part.
“Haruna confirmed the viral video. She admitted that the alleged naira abuse took place at the wedding dinner of her daughter on October 24, 2024.
“The bridegroom, Ibrahim Mohammad hails from Niger Republic and those that allegedly sprayed naira notes and dollar bills were from the groom’s family in Niger Republic.
“While the EFCC appreciates the consciousness its campaigns against naira abuse is building across the country, it will not move against anyone wrongly accused of an alleged crime.
“The Commission remains steadfast in this crusade and would spare no offender, no matter how highly placed.”
It will be recalled that Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, was prosecuted by the EFCC and eventually sent to jail for six months over his involvement in naira abuse.
Although the commission has secured many convictions on naira abuse, Bobrisky is apparently the only high profile personality that has been convicted.
The popular Pascal Okechukwu, well known as Cubana Chief Priest forfeited N10 million to the Federal Government as part of his out of court settlement in lieu of the charge of naira abuse.
Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court in Lagos om June 25, 2024, struck out the charge of naira abuse filed against the celebrity bartender.
