The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa has nominated Dr Olayide Adelami as deputy governor.

Dr Adelami’s name has been forwarded to the House of Assembly for screening.

His nomination came few hours after the governor dissolved the state executive council.

The Assembly said on Wednesday that it has scheduled Thursday, January 25, for the screening of the deputy governor nominee.

A statement by the assembly’s Spokesman, Olatunui Oshati, said on Wednesday that the house had received the nomination for deputy governor from the office of the Governor.

He said that the Governor’s action was in line with Section 191(3)b&c of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

“According to the Speaker, Dr Adelami who hails from Owo in Owo Local Government Area of the State is expected to appear before the House tomorrow, 25th January,2024 for screening,” the statement said.

Dr Adelami’s nomination is coming hours after the governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, dissolved the state executive council.

Professor of Literature at the Adekunle Ajasin Univerosty, Akungba Akoko, and a public analyst, Busuyi Mekusi, said the appointment of Dr Adelailmi as deputy governor was a “strategic move” by the governor and “compensatory” in securing the support of the Owo people who suffered a great loss in the death of Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Prof. Mekusi said although the loss of Akeredolu was too much that could be fully repaid by the appointment of an Owo person as deputy governor, the action would suit frayed nerves and secure the people’s support for the rest of the administration’s tenure.

He however said given the profile of the nominee, it was an appointment well deserved.

Dr Adelami is a retired Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly. He retired in 2018.
