A staunch supporter of the All Progressives Congress in Anyigba, Dekina Local Government Area, Hajiya Memuna, on Sunday suffered attacks at the hands of suspected political thugs and narrowly escaped.

Although the police are yet to reveal the reason behind the attack, APC campaign council says she was attacked for her support for the Governor-elect, Ahmed Ododo.

Memuna, the Woman Leader for Obeya Kekele PU in Anyigba Ward, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A statement by the APC governorship campaign council and signed by its Spokesperson, Kingsley Fanwo, accused the Social Democratic Party for unleashing thugs on the woman.

“The prevalent killing of APC supporters in Kogi East by the Muritala Yakubu Ajaka killer squad was one of the dark spots of the Kogi guber poll which was largely free, fair and credible,” the statement said.

“Security agencies in the state gave the killer candidate and his party a free reign as they terrorized the Kogi East people for not subscribing to the ethnic agenda of Muritala Yakubu.

“The killing of an APC supporter in Kotonkarfe which drew no consequences, has enlivened the audacity of Muritala Yakubu Ajaka and his killers to think they can always get away with acts of criminalities as the heads of security agencies in the state have appeared helpless in defending and securing the people.

“In a show of wanton intrepid recklessness, the SDP jesters have come out boldly to tag security agencies as killers and outlaws without consequences. Muritala Yakubu Ajaka is enjoying immunity conferred on him only by security agencies and he is busy supervising the killing of innocent citizens of the state.

“If anything untoward happens to any of our members henceforth, we will hold the Commissioner of Police and the Director of the State Security Service in charge of Kogi State responsible for abetting the criminal activities of Muritala Yakubu Ajaka. It is the fundamental right of citizens to freely choose who to associate with in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 40 of the the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We call on the NSA, Inspector General of Police and the DG DSS to as a matter of urgency, order the immediate arrest of Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, the defeated candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the recently conducted Kogi Guber election over the atrocities being perpetrated under the guise of politics by the bitter loser.

“We call on our supporters in Anyigba, Dekina Local Government Area and across the state to maintain peaceful conduct as our party will explore all peaceful and legal means to bring perpetrators of violence on our members to book. The Governor-Elect will continue to promote peace, unity and prosperity among the great people of Kogi State.”

However, an earlier statement by the SDP Spokesman, Faruq Adejoh-Audu, said there was an attempt by security agencies to frame party members in connection with violence in the state.

He accused the Police Commissioner, Betrand Onuoha, of plotting with the backing of the APC government in the state to implicate the SDP supporters in acts of violence.

“This time it is feared that they have procured a search warrant from a Lokoja judge who has already gained notoriety for providing judicial cover for the criminal activities of the outlaw Governor of Kogi State, Mr Yahaya Bello,” reads Mr Adejoh-Audu’s statement.

“Information available to us indicates that after several attempts to plant arms and ammunition using Bello’s thugs are proxies in Ayingba failed, the invaders will bring the arms in Mr Yahaya Bello’s Armoured Personel Carriers (APC) and dump them in specific sections of the house, there after they will retreat to bring cameras to start video recording the operation as if they broke into the residence and found the arms.

“The invasion which is expected to commence anytime from now is a desperate recourse by the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Bethrand Unuoha to justify the massacre in the same residence on November 7(2023) during which at least three policemen and two nephews of the DG were murdered in cold blood.

“This rogue action by this thoroughly unethical policeman is coming even as plans for the burial of Inspector Atabor, the Policeman with three children and a pregnant wife murdered at the scene of crime on November 7th is being finalized.

“All Unuoha’s attempts to frame and demonize the SDP as a party of violence have so far failed. There’s no report of a single attack or breach of law by any of our supporters in the course of the six months campaign. Neither was there any formal arrest of our members except persons abducted by his rogue force of thugs and policemen. And we hereby challenge Mr Unuoha to prove the contrary.

“We are by this statement appealing to the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun to immediately redeploy Mr Unuoha from Kogi State before he sheds blood of more innocent persons to cover up his earlier atrocities.”
