Nigeria’s Super Eagles have lost their chance of playing in this year’s World Cup in Quatar after failing to beat Ghana on Tuesday in Abuja.

The Eagles match with the Black Stars of Ghana ended 1-1 at the Abuja National Stadium, given the ticket away to their visitors.

The Super Eagles played out a goalless draw against Otto Addo’s men at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Friday in Kumasi and the result meant they needed an outright win on Tuesday if they would make it through.

Eagles player downcast after match

The Black Stars shot ahead in the 11th minute when Thomas Partey’s speculative shot squirmed under stand-in goalie Francis Uzoho.

But the Eagles drew level from the spot minutes later, Skipper William Troost-Ekong firing in from the spot after Ademola Lookman was tripped in the Ghana box.

Victor Osimhen had an effort ruled out for offside just before half-time, and that was the last threatening attacking foray by a surprisingly demure Eagles despite vociferous support from the packed crowd at the Stadium.

The result means Ghana head to their fourth World Cup finals in Qatar later this year.
