The National Broadcasting Commission(NBC) has queried Channels Television over its interview with the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, which it considered “inciting” and “divisive.”

The interview which was aired on Tuesday, August 24 on Sunrise Daily, had generated a reaction from the Presidency, with the Governor being accused of inciting violence among Nigerians.

“The National Broadcasting Commission monitored the broadcast of your programme Sunrise Daily between 7am and 9am on Tuesday August 24 2021,” the query signed by the commission’s Director General, Balarabe Ilela, on Tuesday, said.

“The programme which had as guest the Executive Governor of Benue State, Governor Samuel Ortom was observed to contain inciting, divisive and unfair comments which were not thoroughly interrogated by the anchors.”

The query noted that the airing of the interview negated relevant provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

“Consequently, Channels  Television is required to explain why appropriate sanctions should not be applied for these infractions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. Your response should reach the commission within 24 hours of receipt of this letter.”

Governor Ortom has maintained in his reaction to the Presidency’s criticism that he stood by his position on the interview.

He said the Presidency should address the issues raised in the interview instead attacking his person.
